Seoul: At an impressive ceremony held at Seoul's enormous COEX Conference Centre, the 30th Asian Racing Conference was officially declared open on Monday evening. Several hundred delegates from all the 20 member countries and a few observer nations were present.

The 25-strong Indian delegation to the conference includes the Chairman of the Turf Authorities of India, Dr. K.M. Srinivasa Gowda, the Hyderabad Race Club Chairman, Mr. R. Surender Reddy, Mysore Race Club Chairman Dr. Sreenivasa Murthy and Asian Racing Federation Council Member, Dr. Cyrus S. Poonawalla.

There is even an Indian stall at the exhibition centre, that of Capricorn-Chanhill Stud Farm, which marks the first occasion in which an Indian breeding operation has been represented in such a prominent way at an international racing forum.

Unfortunately, the opportunity for indulging in some networking and imbibing new ideas and technologies has been missed by the M.R.C. and R.C.T.C., which are not represented at all, while only the Secretary of the R.W.I.T.C. Ltd. is present — not one of that club's nine committee members has cared to attend a meeting which has the likes of France Galop Chairman, M. Louis Romanet, and Mr. Tristram Ricketts of the British Horse Racing Board in attendance.

The chief delegates from each country were introduced in alphabetical order, and led onto the stage by hostesses dressed as jockeys, sporting silks made up of the colours from the respective countries' flags.

Mr. Woo Jae Lee, Chairman of KRA, addressed the large audience, followed by Mr. Lawrence Wong, Chairman of the Asian Racing Federation, and Mr. Hong Soo Park, Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Govt. of Korea.

Short films on the proceedings of the 29th conference held in New Zealand in 2003, and another on the Korean Racing Association were displayed.
